About the role
You spend a focused period answering one hard question alongside the engineers who are building the system, with a specific research home and a deliverable you agree at the start. The point is proximity: a question about personal computing answered next to the people shipping it tends to come out different from the same question answered at a distance. Appointments can fit different career stages, so long as the scope and the supervision suit.
The work
Run a time-bounded project in an agreed area such as efficient inference, secure delegation or personal learning. Collaborate closely with the relevant team and document methods, baselines and limitations. Define access and publication arrangements appropriate to the appointment.
What good looks like
By the end of the agreed visit, deliver a reproducible artifact, a research report and a clear recommendation for the next step.
Evidence we look for
Bring independent research ability and a record of working constructively across disciplines. Appointments can fit different career stages when the scope and supervision are suitable.
What we need to see
- Independent research ability: you can drive a question without close direction
- A record of working constructively across disciplines
- A specific question you want to answer here, and a reason it needs this environment
- You can deliver something concrete within the period rather than an open agenda
Nice to have
- Prior industry or lab visiting appointments
- Work that has been reproduced by others
- Teaching or mentoring experience
The exercise
Outline a short research visit that can achieve a meaningful result without depending on unapproved data or unavailable compute.
Where and how we work
In the office together five days a week, in any of these cities. Remote-friendly around your family, arranged one person at a time.
