About the role

You use your research depth on a question that matters to a real user, in a scoped project with a named mentor and realistic resources. We would rather give you one well-defined problem and the support to answer it properly than a broad brief and no time.

The work

Develop an experiment in systems, hardware, security, learning or human interaction. Agree research objectives, evaluation and publication expectations early. Participate in technical reviews and leave a reproducible artifact the team can continue using.

What good looks like

By the end of the agreed paid placement, deliver a tested result, documented code or methods and a presentation that explains the limitations.

Evidence we look for

Bring doctoral-level research preparation or an equivalent advanced research track appropriate to the project. We value clear thinking, integrity and collaboration alongside technical depth.

What we need to see

  • Doctoral-level research preparation, or an equivalent advanced research track suited to the project
  • Clear thinking you can demonstrate in writing
  • Integrity about results, including inconvenient ones
  • You collaborate rather than working alone by default

Nice to have

  • Published or submitted work
  • Engineering skills alongside the research
  • A specific interest in personal or private computing

The exercise

Discuss a research project you know deeply and propose a smaller experiment that would resolve its largest uncertainty.

Where and how we work

In the office together five days a week, in any of these cities. Remote-friendly around your family, arranged one person at a time.
